The Fire Marshal's office works with the twenty county fire departments and the five out-of-county fire departments that cover the districts inside Duplin County. Working to help those fire departments to reduce their insurance ratings allows the department to help save the citizens money on their insurance. The department is also responsible for routine and special fire inspections to insure a safer environment for living and work as well as providing fire prevention classes in the school system, some of the businesses and civic organizations in Duplin County. The Fire Marshal's office also issues permits required by the NC Fire Code.
The Fire Marshal's Office works with the Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement offices when a fire is determined to be of a suspicious nature. This department also works to assist the various fire departments in determining the cause and origin of a fire.
The Fire Marshal's Office works in connection with Emergency Services and Emergency Management during and after disasters either natural or man-made and will also work with all departments involved in the response and recovery effort until the mission is complete.
