Breast Feeding Support
The Breastfeeding support program offers at no cost:
- Registered Lactation Consultant with Pediatric experience on staff
- Breastfeeding support through home visits, phone calls, health department visits, visits to Duplin General Hospital.
- Monthly breastfeeding classes.
- Hospital grade electric breast pump loan program.
- Free breast pump kit and supplies to mom's in the pump loan program.
Breastfeeding benefits to mom:
- Promotes weight loss
- Can lower stress levels
- Reduces post-partum depression
- Protects against osteoporosis
- Reduces risk of breast cancer
- Reduces risk of ovarian cancer
- Reduces risk of cervical cancer
- Promotes emotional health
- Saves mom's time
Breastfeeding benefits to baby:
- Protects against ear infections, pneumonia, bronchitis, kidney infections, blood poisoning, allergies, asthma, gastrointestinal infections
- May protect against obesity later in life
- May protect from diabetes
- May lower the risk of sudden infant death (SIDS)
- Decreases tooth decay
- Promotes strong facial muscles
- Promotes healthy vision and speech
When to call for breastfeeding help or support if:
- Your baby will not breastfeed for 2 feedings in a row
- Your baby is breastfeeding less than 7 times in a 24 hour period
- Your baby has less that 5 to 6 wet diapers in a 24 hour period after your "milk comes in"
- Your baby is not content between feedings
- Your baby left the hospital without a good latch on
- You have any questions or concerns about breastfeeding or returning to work or school
Breastfeeding is going good when:
- Your baby nurses frequently, about 10 times in a 24 hour period
- Your baby passes at least 1 to 2 black, sticky stools in the first 3 days after delivery
- Your baby has at least 3 to 4 wet diapers by the 3rd day after delivery.
- Your baby is content between feedings
- You and your baby are comfortable throughout the feeding
