The solid waste department offers a variety of services to fulfill the county's need for a comprehensive solid waste management program. They manage an on-site transfer station for the collection of solid waste. Trash is compacted and shipped by tractor-trailer load to a regional landfill. This department also manages the Land Clearing Inert Debris that is disposed of at the county's permitted site. Yard waste, stumps, trees, pallets, unpainted and untreated wood, along with bricks, blocks, concrete and asphalt are some of the many items that can be placed there.

A recycling warehouse is also on-site that processes recyclable materials collected throughout the county. Materials are then sold to manufacturers for recycling into new products.

The solid waste department helps to implement The Keep America Beautiful program that offers solid waste management, source reduction, recycling, beautification, and litter prevention education programs to area preschools, schools, civic clubs, and groups upon request.

The State requires that all transfer operators, public weigh masters, recycling coordinators and environmental educators be certified. These certifications are in effect and are updated as required.

Duplin County currently ranks in the top 10% of recycling programs in the state, receiving awards for Outstanding County Recycling Program and most recently the 2002 Outstanding Community Involvement special achievement award from NC Big Sweep.
