New White Good Recycling Pad Thanks to funding provided from the NC White Good Disposal Tax Account, Duplin County was able to complete a concrete pad for white good and scrap metal storage. The 75' x 125' concrete pad has 6' retaining walls. It is located across the road from the current recycling warehouse near the site of the future transfer station.
The white good recycling pad will be used to store discarded major appliances and scrap metals until a sufficient load accumulates for a contractor to remove for recycling. Scrap metals and white goods were banned from landfill disposal in 1991, and since then Duplin has simply been placing them in a separate area adjacent to its land clearing inert debris landfill. Scrap metals and white goods are currently being sold at market value to Meshaw Brothers Contractors. The contractor hauls the metals directly to a smelter for recycling. In addition to helping with loading, the concrete retaining walls will help hide the scrap metals from public view, improving the aesthetics along Landfill Rd.
The state funded $93,569.85 of the $106,069.85 project. Duplin County 's portion was $12,500, which came from the solid waste enterprise fund. The state funds are generated by a $2 disposal tax consumers pay on all major appliance purchases. This fund pays for future management and disposal costs of the appliance. Local contractor Joe Kenan was selected for construction of the concrete pad.
