Although it has been 5 years since Hurricane Floyd devastated eastern North Carolina, some Duplin County residents can recount the stories as if it were just yesterday. And some of their stories have been included in Faces from the Flood: Hurricane Floyd Remembered, a 200+ page book written by Richard Moore, who was serving as State Treasurer on September 16, 1999. Jay Barnes, also the author of North Carolina's Hurricane History, co-authored this compilation of 36 heroic stories that represent how local citizens pulled together in the face of tragedy. Five years later, the sun shining brightly over Wallace, Mr. Moore returned to this area to recognize some of these local heroes.
Folks gathered Wednesday at the Wallace Volunteer Fire Department during a ceremony to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Floyd. Mr. Moore has been visiting the heroes of the many small, rural communities that experienced Floyd's wrath to introduce his book and thank them for their efforts. Firefighters Ronnie Rich and Bo Fussell, both who have personal stories featured in the book, were on hand at the ceremony. Firefighter Ronnie Rich summed it up best saying, “We didn't do it to be heroes. We did it because that's our job.”
All proceeds from book sales go to the Salvation Army and the Red Cross.
