Census 2010 update
This in from the NC State Data Center from a conference call with Census Bureau staff discussing 2010 Census operations: The bulk of the 2010 Census data collection work is done. Some field verification work will be done in August, but it will be a small operation. You may see a Census worker in your community in August. The 2010 Census Telephone Assistance Center will close on Friday, July 30. If you have people that need Census help, they can call the regional Census support line at 888-222-4936. The Census Bureau is testing an “Evaluation and Experiment” form in August/September. The yellow form will be mailed to 286,000 households NATIONALLY. 1/3 of those households will be asked to complete the form online. 1/3 will be asked to mail back the form. 1/3 may either complete the form online or mail it in. NC will have households in the sample. If you get calls from people in your area asking about a weird Census form this could be it. The Census Coverage Measurement (CCM) operation will survey 1 million households NATIONALLY from mid-August through early October to evaluate how well the 2010 Census reached various housing situations and communities. The 15 Local Census Offices across the state that conducted the 2010 Census field operations will close in October/November. Geographic products (i.e., shapefiles) for the new 2010 Census geographies will be released in November. These will show the new census tracts, block groups, census blocks, etc. The 2010 Census redistricting data (or the Public Law 94-171 data) will be released in February/March 2011. 2010 Census state population totals will be released to the president by December 31, 2010. Those are the highlights of the conference call.
