GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Work requires daily contact with clients and their family members, as well as with other health professional and staff within the health department or community for the purpose of determining the client’s nutrition needs and ensuring they receive appropriate nutrition services. Direct services are typically provided through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).

SPECIFIC DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

80%       WIC Nutrition Services

  • Uses nutrition assessment information to determine eligibility for WIC.
  • Provides individual and small group nutrition counseling on food groups and child development nutrition needs.
  • Analyzes clinical and nutritional data in order to prescribe appropriate supplemental foods based on the clients’ nutritional needs and food preference.
  • Interprets laboratory information. 
  • Work may include other related assignment as determined by management and done under general supervision by a higher level nutritionist or health director.

15 %      Medical Nutrition Therapy

  • Complete a nutrition assessment on each patient using anthropometric and biochemical measurements, health history data, socio-economic information, and food/nutrition history to use this assessment to establish program eligibility. (Note: Clients with complex nutrition and/or medical problems are referred to other health professionals or a higher level nutritionist. If Nutritionist I is qualified, then follow scope of practice.)
  • Provides in-depth individual counseling concerning therapeutic diets, developmental processes, programmatic parameters, and nutrition principles.
  • Determines an appropriate food prescription.
  • Researches the respective medical problems.
  • Develops a realistic plan of care with the patient and other health care providers.
  • Counsels and assists client with behavior change to meet medical goals.
  • Discusses treatment plans and dietary modifications with the client and with other members of the health team.
  • Provides case management as necessary and identifies community resources.
  • Assimilates and integrates psychosocial information, cultural issues, and literacy level into counseling sessions and overall plan of care.
  • Researches nutritionally related medical problems using current nutrition and medical texts and literature accessed through searching medical journal databases.
  • Documents all aspects of nutritional care in the electronic medical record according to agency’s policies and procedures.
  • Assists with Diabetes Self-Management Education program.
  • Develops nutrition educational resources such as PowerPoint presentations and handouts.
  • Reviews nutrition education resources for appropriateness with targeted populations.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance.

3%         Administration Duties

  • Attend professional workshops and conferences to stay updated on current nutritional trends, problems, and state of the art delivery methods for improving the quality of services rendered to clients.
  • Assist with strategic planning for expansion and/or maintenance of nutrition programs.
  • Assure that all clinical nutrition services are provided in compliance with HIPAA.
  • Participate in the Nutrition and Health Promotion Section’s strategic planning process and translates concepts created into an effective action plan with timeline.  Monitors objectives and adjusts resources to meet objectives.
  • Provide input into a marketing plan for nutritional services. 

Marginal Functions – While the following tests are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

2%          Other Duties

  • Serve as team member during disease outbreaks.
  • Serve as team member during disasters for staffing of emergency shelters.
  • Other duties as directed by supervisor.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from a Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education-approved Didactic Program in Dietetics; or
  • Dietetic Technician, Registered with the Commission on Dietetics Registration with a Bachelor’s degree in any subject area from an accredited four-year college or university; or
  • Bachelors of Science degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Community Nutrition from an accredited four-year college or university
  • Candidates should provide documentation of registrations status from the Commission on Dietetic Registration, provide college or university transcripts or CADE verification statement.
