Part Time Museum Stem Educator (24 hours per week) – (Museum)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Director, the Museum STEM Educator will support in any aspect of museum operations as required, such as preparation of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education program development/facilitation, exhibit development, education collections cataloging, and school and group tours. Additionally, preparation of objects for storage and research may be required. This position will be 24 hours per week, Wednesday-Saturday, with flexibility.

  • Develop, deliver, and evaluate programs for PreK-12 students, teachers, and the public.
  • Schedule on-site guided and self-guided group tours; receive feedback from teachers; distribute related handouts or educational materials.
  • Represent the Museum and its work in the field of education at professional conferences as appropriate.
  • Participate in relevant professional activities to maintain an awareness of current practices and issues in social studies, science, and museum education fields.
  • Assist with the planning and installation of exhibits.
  • Train and work with volunteers and interns.
  • Co-develop educational materials and deal with logistics of exhibits (i.e., labeling, traffic flow, compiling information for volunteer training, etc.).
  • Assist with planning, coordinating, and implementing museum special events and educational programs, including budgeting and monitoring expenditures.
  • Conduct research in identification and interpretation of museum collections and help develop a growing education collection.
  • Monitor the safety and condition of objects on display.
  • Order and maintain the inventory of supplies needed for programs.
  • Answer phones, greet visitors and monitor their movement; distribute information.
  • Provide excellent customer service while maintaining a safe, friendly and orderly environment in exhibit spaces and the Museum’s historical park.
  • Handle inquiries from researchers and the public.
  • Perform related duties as required.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS/COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS

Associate, Undergraduate, or Master’s Degree in broad-field science, biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, environmental science, technology/engineering, museum studies, education, related fields, or equivalent. Comfort with teaching interdisciplinary history and science content.

Minimum of one year experience developing and delivering programs in museums or other educational venues. Ability to teach inquiry- and object-based lessons that are interactive and developmentally appropriate for a diverse range of students, including PreK-12 students and students with different learning needs and varying museum experiences. Experience working with teachers and school administration to develop and facilitate collaborative programming.Willingness to problem-solve and work flexibly in planning, scheduling, and implementing programs.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic team member with strong written and verbal communication skills who is able to work collaboratively across departments and with outside contacts.

Must have demonstrated skills in prioritizing, organizing projects, and multi-tasking.

Must exhibit a mature, flexible, and professional demeanor both in presentation and actions.

Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings is necessary.

Bilingual proficiency a plus, Spanish preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina.

Museum positions are reviewed annually during the budget process and are contingent upon the continued receipt of grant funds.
