The purpose of this position is to provide for the protection of children 0-18 years of age who are being exposed to maltreatment. Employees in this classification receive reports of alleged abuse, neglect and dependency for children, which have been substantiated. Employees also provide and/or arrange in home services in order to enable children to be protected in their home(s). The In Home Services Social Worker is responsible for developing Family Services Case Plans with the parent(s)/caretaker(s) which identify areas of problematic concern and working towards resolving the issues.



Employees maintain a caseload ranging from mild, moderate, and complex cases while working with clients: Factors contributing to a case being substantiated are due to substance abuse, domestic violence, lack of financial income and/or employment and supervision/discipline issues just to name a few. Assessments require consulting with a supervisor, program manager and other social workers while assessing cases with the families. Work requires the ability to establish rapport with child(ren), parent(s) and/or caretaker(s) in order to gather pertinent information and implement a work plan to alleviate any stressors within the home. The purpose of In Home Services is to enhance the family’s capabilities and keep the child(ren) safe and protected in their .own family environment.

Employee must have knowledge of the principles of social work along with good social work practice. Social Worker must have knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of Duplin. County and the agency. Conducts interviews with the parents and/or caretaker(s) to discuss allegations in accordance to the laws and regulations mandated for all county Department of Social Services.

A direct flow of services to child(ren), parent(s) and/or caretaker(s) is achieved by completing a Family Services Case Plan which outlines the specific goals/activities to be achieved and identifies the problems/concerns. This employee provides recommendations and referrals through agencies/resources that might be of assistance in helping the family correct conditions that have been identified. Regular contacts are made with the family and/or other significant persons relevant to the case in order to meet standards for the services rendered for Children’s Protective Services.

Minimum Training and Experience Requirements — Master’s degree from an accredited school of social work and one year of social work experience; or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of social work and two years of social work or counseling experience; or Master’s degree in a counseling field and two years of social work or counseling experience; or a four-year degree in a human services field or related curriculum and three years of social work or counseling experience; or graduation from a four-year college or university and four years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling or a related human service field providing experience in the techniques of casework, group work or community organization; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Special Note — Must have a valid N. C. driver’s license. Must have access to use of a motor vehicle for travel to client homes and various destinations throughout the county and state.
